Why Rent?

bar

Because it makes sense for most people! Many families go out and purchase campers and vehicles to pull them when they never even went camping before. And, many find that they either don't like it as much as they thought that they would or that they never really get to use their camper enough to make the cost worth while.

The two most common mistakes that families make when buying a camper:

What they find out is:

Here are some reasons why renting before you buy makes so much sense.

COST:

Cost avoidance is the number one reason to rent a camper. Camping with an RV or camper of any type is very expensive. Not only do you have the initial cost of purchasing a camper which, on average, could range from $15,000 for a small one to $50,000 or more for a larger or nicer camper. And, if the family car is not not a truck or large SUV you are going to have to purchase a new vehicle to tow it. Now of course you can buy a motor home and avoid the tow vehicle but, then you are incurring the cost to maintain another vehicle.

Regardless of what type of camper you buy and how much you initially spend on it, there will be other costs as well. Every fall your camper will have to be winterized to prevent freezing of the pipes and water tanks. And then in the spring it will have to be readied for use again. This can be done by the owner or you can pay a shop to do it. Either way, it is time and money. Owning a camper is like owning a second home. You have appliances, a furnace, hot water heater, plumbing and other items that will need to be maintained and will inevitably require repairs over time. You will have to purchase a second set of everything that you might want to use while camping from pots and pans to towels and linens.

Upgrading to a camper is still a lot of work!

There is definitely advantages to camping in a camper of any type over a tent. But the amount of work involved is not one of them. Besides the maintenance of the camper and the tow vehicle (if using a popup or travel trailer), you will have

Towing and/or Driving an RV is not for everyone

Towing a trailer or driving an RV requires a special skill and is not for everyone. An inexperienced driver can be dangerous. Regardless of how good of a driver you are, driving such a big rig or trailering can be more stress then most people bargain for... especially in the New York area.

Useful Life:

Campers don't last very long. The are not built like your house is built and they are not temperature and moisture controlled when you are not using them so they do tend to wear quickly and require maintenance. In most cases, within the first five years of ownership, a camper will start to show signs of wear and will require repairs.

Just like your home, your family is likely to out grow your camper and then later as the kids grow up and no longer camp with you your needs will change again.

Rent first to be a more educated buyer

And to be completely honest, its's probably as much work as tent camping is.
